Black Rhinos in Solio and Ol Pejeta

Did you know that in the 1970s, Kenya was home to over 20,000 black rhinos. In the following 20 years the population was decimated by poaching which reduced numbers to less than 400. Black rhinos were declared critically endangered.

Kenya now has nearly 1,000 black rhinos, according to the wildlife department. That's the third biggest black rhino population in the world behind South Africa and Namibia. There are just 6,200 wild black rhinos left in the world

With a population of over 165 eastern black rhinos, Ol Pejeta is the largest black rhino sanctuary in East and Central Africa. Situated only 1 hour drive from Glamping Kenya Lodge.

Solio Conservancy is the home for more then 90 black rhinos, only just 10 minutes from Glamping Kenya Lodge. It is responsible for having trans-located over 100 black and 60 white rhinoceros to other parts of Kenya over the years, including 6 to Uganda.

Black rhinos are known for their complex social behaviors and problem-solving abilities. They exhibit a higher level of intelligence compared to other rhino species. They are capable of learning and adapting to their environment, recognizing individuals, and displaying cooperative behaviors. Females may stay with the mother longer than three years. Lifespan in the wild is 35-50 years.
