Romance with the lions of OL Pejeta

Lions breed throughout the year. Lionesses have a litter every two years on average. When a lioness is pregnant, she has a gestation period of more than a hundred days. Usually two to three cubs are born at a time.

The mating of lions is special to watch and does not always seem to be pleasant. When mating, the lion bites the lioness on her neck for a kind of hold. After copulation, which only lasts a few seconds, the female snaps at the lion and he quickly runs away. Females are in heat for an average of 2-8 days.

A lioness in heat is not necessarily ready for fertilization. To be on the safe side, the male therefore mates with her 30 to 50 times over 3 to 4 days.
