Location

  • Shompole Wilderness Camp sits on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro River, in Shompole Community Land, Southern Kenya.
  • Managed by the du Toit family alongside a local Maasai team.

Accommodation

  • Six tents only – intimate, homely, and wild atmosphere.
  • Tents are strategically placed to offer comfort and access to the stunning surrounding wilderness.

The Shompole Hide

  • Co-created by: Johann du Toit & wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas (Camtraptions, BeetleCam).
  • Structure: Two sunken, refurbished shipping containers.
  • View: Ground-level view of a small waterhole (9m to furthest point, 12m wide).
  • Lighting Options:
    • Front Lighting
    • Side Lighting (adjustable height, power, and color)
    • Back Lighting (for silhouettes and dust effects)
  • Photo Gear Recommendations:
    • Wide: for giraffes, elephants
    • Medium: for zebras, impalas
    • 300mm+: for civets, close-ups
    • Fast lenses preferred
  • Comfort & Amenities:
    • 4 beds, fans, flushing toilet
    • Starlink internet
    • Gimbals and bean bags provided (bring your own mounting plates)
    • Netting, no glass – close, immersive animal encounters
